In 2021 Mark Rober came to Edelweiss Pianos looking for an instrument that could be taken apart and rebuilt. The team gave him a transparent upright with a self-play system, and the collaboration produced a piano that doubles its playing speed and, unexpectedly, learns to talk.
The talking piano is not a recording. Precision solenoids strike real strings; felt hammers produce acoustic sound in the room. It is a mechanical instrument pushed to the edge of voice.
